    On the other hand, you could choose to dismiss the whole project as an ill-conceived and frankly rather unpleasant/embarassing catwalk for self-indulgent rock and pop stars (see ISD’s xmas special on Band Aid 20). Bob Geldof would do well to remember that the long history of popular protest for social justice was achieved in spite of his sort, not because of them.

    Oh, and the Spice Girls were turned down for this event on account of not being serious enough. The official response was “With all due respect, this isn’t Party in the Park.” Is it not? Here’s that line up again:

    * Coldplay
    * The Killers
    * Velvet Revolver
    * Bob Geldof
    * The Cure
    * Mariah Carey
    * Dido
    * Keane
    * Snow Patrol
    * Elton John
    * Annie Lennox
    * Madonna
    * Paul McCartney
    * Razorlight
    * Snoop Dogg
    * Sting
    * U2
    * Joss Stone
    * Stereophonics
    * REM
    * Scissor Sisters
    * Muse
    * Robbie Williams

    Anyone who becomes involved in a political march as part of an entertainment event is completely cheapening the issue – and it’s an insult to everyone’s intelligence to suggest people won’t go without this sort of “incentive”. I was among 300,000 in Genoa in 2001 and didn’t need some pompous longhair to talk me into coming along. Geldof, Bono and co. are a disgrace, and a right wing backlash will be their only legacy.

    I’m fairly convinced the Mirror was making that up. The other links suggest Geldof is still happy for them to appear in a line up that is, as you’ve pointed out, perfect for the Spice Girls.

    Not that I would go. Make Poverty History can have my donations without my being subjected to what’s on offer there.
