Of "Nazi" Costumes

I’m not really one to stand up for the royals. Couldn’t give a toss about them, in fact, but this crap about Harry dressing up as a Nazi awakens my feelings of fair play. When I heard that he’d dressed as a Nazi I’d naturally envisaged your classic SS uniform, silver skull and crossbones, the full works.

Now even in this instance I’d give him the right to wear said uniform because it was only a facy dress party. But when I finally saw the photos it turned out we were talking about an Africa Corps uniform with the swastika armband. The thing is that, yes, it is a ‘Nazi’ uniform, but only in the sense that all soldiers at that time were Nazi party members. In terms of a ‘Nazi’ I think these days we’re progressive enough to associate the term with those who were actually in charge of the final solution, i.e. the SS.

To attack him for wearing what pretty much amounted to a German army uniform circa 1942 (?) would seem to be taking the whole ‘moral high ground’ idea a bit far. Still, I guess such shit sells papers. It’s interesting to see how many people genuinely do think this was a wrong move purely because he is who he is. About that I’m not really sure what to think…

yeah someone on the radio said it was especially bad for him to do it ‘cos he was “educated” – these sort of people believe in a world where the educated elite set the standard for everyone else, and i don’t want to jump on their particular bandwagon for that reason. and anyway sid vicious got away with it…

Yeah, but surely Sid was “lower class” and so allowed to “not know” what he was doing, as far as the media was concerned. Wankers…
