Worst. Lyrics. Ever?

I finally heard the latest track from “The Others” on the radio the other night, called ‘Lackey’. Probably the worst lyrics since Led Zeppelin thought it was cool to sing

T’was in the darkest depths of Mordor, I met a girl so fair.
But Gollum, and the evil one crept up and slipped away with her, her, her….yeah.

Lackey has the lines:

I don’t wanna be a lackey in a job that doesn’t pay.
I don’t wanna have to listen you… Today.
I don’t wanna have to sell my soul to the man… Today.

Oh. My. God. The Man??

Musically, its fuzzed-up bass and drumming are pretty good, even if the arrangement is blisteringly obvious, tending to bland. Dominic’s singing is gratingly annoying too, though maybe that’s because he’s trying to make it sound like he didn’t use some stuff he wrote on the back of an exercise book back in secondary school and instead suggest he believes this? (I’ve met him and he never once referred to ‘The Man’, I can assure you.)

Yeah, I have to agree, it is embarrassingly awful!! If the NME gives the album and/or single a good review I’m gonna burn every copy I see and bomb there offices

I don’t really think those lyrics are so bad. Not everything has to be a piece of poetry. I think those lines have an emotive quality to them which (to my mind) is suggestive of questioning how ‘good’ you really are. (Nick Hornby’s book touches on quite a lot of stuff about that sort of idea.)

They don’t mean anything exactly but they suggest something.

Look at the At the Drive-In: Fantastic lyrics but if you try to examine them in a literal sense they are meaningless. But as you read them images are evoked in your head.

Coldplay are massive offenders in nonsensical lyrics, despite many people calling Martin a “poet” or some such rubbish. I remember listening to Adam and Joe on the radio a few years back and they totally tore apart a few of Martins efforts. I can only remember one which was “God Put a Smile Upon Your Face”:

Where do we go nobody knows?
I’ve gotta say I’m on my way down

Now, when you work it out I’m worse than you
Yeah, when you work it out I wanted to
Now, when you work out where to draw the line

    What the fuck?

Your guess is as good as mine

    my thoughts exactly.

    How about:

    You’re beautiful
    You’re beautiful
    You’re beautiful

    …It’s true

    He deserves to die.

Aren’t you missing some ‘becauses’ in there? But yes, fairly lightweight lyrics.
